Toassurestabilityandproperoperationofyourwheelchair,youmustatalltimes
maintainproperbalance.Yourwheelchairhasbeendesignedtoremainuprightand
stableduringnormaldailyactivitiesaslongasyoudonotmovebeyondthecenterof
gravity.DONOTleanforwardoutofthewheelchairanyfurtherthanthelengthofthe
armrests.
Coping With Everyday Obstacles
NOTE:Forthisinformation,refertoFIGURE 4.1.
Copingwiththeirritationofeverydayobstaclescanbealleviatedsomewhatbylearning
howtomanageyourwheelchair.Keepinmindyourcenterofgravitytomaintainstability
andbalance.
Whilethewalkingbeamallowsyoutotraverseuptoa1inchbumpor
threshold,
stoppingafterthewheelscrossthebumpposesaproblem.Thechaircannotreverseover
thebumpatthispoint.Continueforwardandthenturnaround.
Whilethewheelchairisdesignedforuse
primarilyinandaroundthehome,the
providershoulddeterminewhetherthis
chairissuitableforthe
actualenvironment
thechairwillbeusedin.
DONOTgodownrampatfullspeed.
Someseat/backpositionswillcause
wheelchairtofeelunstable.

CAUTION
Be aware of condition of ramp. Traction will be diminished/nonexistent on a
slippery surface. Proceed with caution.
A Note to Wheelchair Assistants
Whenassistancetothewheelchairuserisrequired,remembertousegoodbody
mechanics.Keepyourbackstraightandbendyourkneeswhenevertiltingwheelchairor
traversingcurbsorotherimpediments.
Also,beawareofdetachablepartssuchasarmsorlegrests.ThesemustNEVERbeused
tomovethewheelchairorasliftingsupports,astheymaybeinadvertentlyreleased,
resultinginpossibleinjurytotheuserand/orassistant(s).
Whenlearninganewassistancetechnique,haveanexperiencedassistanthelpyoubefore
attemptingitalone.
