Adjusting Patient Operated Wheel Locks

DO NOT attempt to stop a moving wheelchair with the wheel locks. Wheel locks
are not brakes.
NOTE:Forthisprocedure,refertoFIGURE 9.4onpage46.
NOTE:Ifwheelsarepneumatic,beforeadjustingthewheellockassemblies,ensurethatthetires
areinflatedtotherecommendedpsionthesidewalloftire.
1. Ensurethewheellockisintheopen(unlocked)position.
2. Loosentheboltandlocknutthatsecurethewheellockassemblytothewheelchair
frame.
3. Repositionthewheellocksothatwhenengaged,thewheellockshoeembedsthetire
1/8inch(3/16inchforpneumatictires)andholdsthewheelchair.
4. Securelytightentheboltandlocknutsecuringthewheellocktothewheelchairframe.
5. Engagethewheellock.
6. MeasurethedistancethewheellockisembeddedintothetireasshowninDetailʺAʺ.
NOTE:Anywheellockadjustmentshouldembedthewheellockshoeatleast1/8inch(3/16inch
forpneumatictires)intothetirewhenengaged.
