TheMarathonFA/FRfiberopticseriesofinstrumentsarehighperformanceinfraredthermometers.
Eachhasafrontendconsistingofasmall,fixedfocusopticalheadcoupledtoaruggedfiberoptic
cablewrappedwithaflexiblestainlesssteelsheath.Thefiberopticcableattachestoanelectronics
enclosure,whichcan
bemountedawayfromthehot,hostileenvironment.Theelectronicsenclosure
canbeconnectedtoacomputerwithitstwowayRS485interface.
Temperaturemeasurementscanbetakenusingeitherofthefollowingmodes:
1colormode(FAandFRsensors)forstandardtemperaturemeasurements.The1color
mode
isbestformeasuringthetemperatureoftargetsinareaswherenosightingobstructions,
eithersolidorgaseous,exist.The1colormodeisalsobestwherethetargetcompletelyfills
themeasurementspotandwherethebackgroundorforegroundarehigherintemperature
thanthetarget.
2colormode
(FRsensorsonly)temperaturesaredeterminedfromtheratiooftwoseparate
andoverlappinginfraredbands.The2colormodeisbestformeasuringthetemperatureof
targetsthatarepartiallyobscured(eitherintermittentlyorpermanently)byotherobjects,
openings,screens,orviewingwindowsthatreduceenergy,andby
dirt,smoke,orsteamin
theatmosphere.The2colormodeca nalsobeusedontargetsthatdonotcompletelyfillthe
measurementspot,providedthebackgroundismuchcoolerthanthetarget.
Eachmodeloperatesasatemperaturemeasurementsubsystemconsistingofopticalelements,spectral
filters,detector,and
digitalelectronics.AllcomponentsarewatertightNEMA4(IEC529,IP65)rated
andarebuilttooperateona100percentdutycycleinindustrialenvironments.Simultaneousanalog
and digital outputs consist of standardized current signals commonly available for use with
computers,controllers,recorders,alarms,orA/Dinterfaces.

Twocolorratiotechnologymakespossibleaccurateandrepeatabletemperaturemeasurementsthat
arefreefromdependenceonabsoluteradiatedenergyvalues.Inuse,a2colorsensordetermines
temperaturefromtheratiooftheradiatedenergiesintwoseparatewavelengthbands(colors).The
benefits of 2color sensors are that accurate
measurements can be made under the following
conditions:
Whenthefieldofviewtothetargetispartiallyblockedorobscured.
Whenthetargetissmallerthanthesensor’sfieldofview.
Whentargetemissivitiesareloworchangingbythesamefactorinbothwavelengthbands.
