Installing The Internal Cooling Fan
CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only perform
troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or
telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your
warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product.
CAUTION: Do not operate the system with the cover removed for a duration exceeding 5 minutes.
1. Hold the system cooling fan by the sides with the cable end facing the bottom of the chassis.
CAUTION: Do not remove or install the internal cooling fan by holding the blades.
2. Align the four tabs of the internal cooling fan with the four slots on the inside of the chassis.
3. Press and slide the internal cooling fan into the slots till the release tab locks into place.
CAUTION: Do not remove or install the internal cooling fan by holding the blades.
4. Route the internal cooling fan power cable along the side of the chassis and secure the cable using the clips.
5. Connect the internal cooling fan power cable to the FAN1 connector on the system board.
6. Replace the cooling shroud.
7. Close the system.
8. If applicable, place the system upright on a flat, stable surface and rotate the system feet outward.
9. Reconnect the system to its electrical outlet and turn the system on, including any attached peripherals.
Removing The External Cooling Fan

warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product.
CAUTION: Do not operate the system with the cover removed for a duration exceeding 5 minutes.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the electrical outlet and
peripherals.
2. If applicable, rotate the system feet inward and lay the system on its side on a flat, stable surface.
NOTE: For systems installed with the wheel assembly, ensure that you lay the system on a sturdy, stable
surface with the wheel assembly extending off the edge of the surface.
3. Open the system.
4. Remove the cooling shroud.
5. Disconnect the external cooling fan power cable from the system board and free the power cable from the clips.
6. Remove the four screws that secure the external cooling fan to the chassis.
7. Rotate the top of the external cooling fan away from the system until the hooks are free of the slots and remove the
fan.
8. Remove the external cooling fan power cable from of the system through the slot in the back of the chassis.
9. Install the cooling shroud.
10. Close the system.
11. If applicable, place the system upright on a flat, stable surface and rotate the system feet outward.
12. Reconnect the system to its electrical outlet and turn the system on, including any attached peripherals.
