SHUT–DOWN
Introduction
After you have parked in a safe place, check your vehicle to
make sure it will be ready for the next trip. To make sure your
vehicle is ready to go after a long stop (such as overnight),
please follow the suggestions below. Your vehicle will be eas-
ier to get going when you are ready, and it will be safer for
everyone who might be around it.
Please remember, too, that in some states it is illegal to leave
the engine running and the vehicle unattended.
Final Stopping Procedures
1. Set the parking brake before leaving the driver's seat.
To hold your vehicle while it is parked, DO NOT rely on
the following:
air brakes
hand control valve for trailer brakes
engine compression
Always use your parking brakes!
WARNING! Do not use the trailer hand brake or
service brakes to park and hold an unattended
vehicle—use the parking brakes. Because ser-
vice brakes work with air pressure, these brakes
could slowly release. Your vehicle could roll,
causing a serious accident. Someone could be
hurt or killed. Never rely on the service brakes to
hold a parked vehicle.
2. If you must park on a steep grade, always block the
wheels.
