malfunction...

after readout are at zero, step on scale, and it ends up saying either 'error' or '___'

0 After the scale has been lightly dropped, (which is the only way I have ever been able to turn it on) the readout finally settles at "0". Lately though, when I step on it, it reads "ERR" or "---". It has a fresh battery. Any suggestions?
